Wisconsin Assembly to Consider Changing Animal Seizure Laws on March 11

The Wisconsin Assembly Committee on Corrections and the Courts will conduct a public
hearing on Assembly Bill 793 on Thursday, March 11, 2010. 
 
As introduced, this bill seeks to amend state statutes regarding the seizure and
subsequent care of animals whose owners are suspected of mistreatment or dog
fighting.
  
The bill contains a number of new provisions, including declaring an animal
“unclaimed” if the owner fails to pay an amount mandated by the court
for care of the animals within 5 days of the order. The owner must continue to pay
in either bonds, securities, or direct funds (depending on the court order) for the
duration of all proceedings relating to the animal(s) seized. If the owner is found
not guilty, the owner will receive any unused funds.

Attend the committee meeting on March 11, and express any concerns you have with
this legislation.
